01The Short Version
OceanBite stores the minimum it needs to run a game: your Discord user ID, your Discord username, and your gameplay data. It does not collect your messages, email address, real name, or any other personal information — and it never sells your data to anyone.
OceanBite also has a website: these information pages at oceanbite.app, and an optional game client at play.oceanbite.app. Like any website, both involve services that Discord-only play does not — the providers that deliver the pages, and a visit counter. Section 05 says exactly what those see, and how to opt out.
02Data We Collect
When you interact with OceanBite (slash commands, buttons, menus, or modals), we store:
- Your Discord user ID — a numeric identifier assigned by Discord, used as your save file's key;
- Your Discord username — the public handle attached to your interactions, used solely for game purposes: showing names in clan member lists, tournaments, and leaderboards;
- Server (guild) IDs of servers where you've used the Bot — used only for per-server leaderboards and tournaments;
- Gameplay data — your in-game progress: levels, currencies, inventory, equipment, skills, quests, clan membership, pets, badges, statistics, and similar game state;
- User-provided game content — clan names you create and game preferences you set (e.g. embed color).
We do not read or store message content, avatars, email addresses, or any data outside the game interactions listed above. Avatars are rendered live by Discord and never stored by us. We never store IP addresses — but visiting a website unavoidably reveals your IP address to the services that deliver it, so if you use this website or the game in a browser, read section 05.
03How We Use Data
- To operate the game: saving and loading your progress;
- To provide social features: leaderboards, clans, and tournaments;
- To keep the game fair: enforcing cooldowns and fair-play rules.
We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, analytics resale, or any purpose unrelated to running the game. The website's usage statistics (section 05) are read in aggregate, to see which parts of the game are actually used and which are worth building on.
04Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or trade your data. The only parties that process it are:
- Discord, which transmits your interactions to the Bot (governed by Discord's Privacy Policy);
- The hosting provider the Bot runs on, where the game database is stored;
- GitHub, which serves the information pages at oceanbite.app — it delivers them, and so processes your IP address and request details (governed by GitHub's Privacy Statement);
- Cloudflare, whose network carries traffic to the game at play.oceanbite.app — it handles the connection itself, and so processes your IP address and request details (governed by Cloudflare's Privacy Policy);
- Google, which measures use of the website through Google Analytics (governed by Google's Privacy Policy).
The last three apply only to the website — these pages and the game in a browser. Playing in Discord involves none of them.
Some gameplay data is visible to other players by design — for example, leaderboard rankings, clan membership, and your profile when another player views it.
05The Website
OceanBite has two addresses. The information pages at oceanbite.app — what you are reading now — and the game itself at play.oceanbite.app, where you sign in with Discord and play in a browser. The game there is the same game and the same save file, and nothing new is stored about you. But delivering a website at all involves services that Discord-only play does not:
- GitHub serves oceanbite.app. These pages are static files published through GitHub Pages, so GitHub delivers them and sees your IP address, your browser's user-agent, and which pages you request.
- Cloudflare carries play.oceanbite.app. The game reaches you through a Cloudflare tunnel, so Cloudflare handles that connection and sees the same things. This is how the game is served and kept available; we do not mine it.
- Google Analytics measures how both are used. It records page views, roughly where in the world you are (Google derives this from your IP address and does not retain the address itself), your device and browser type, how you arrived, and basic on-page interactions — how far down a page you scrolled, and clicks on links that lead off the site.
The two addresses share a single Analytics measurement, so arriving on these pages and then clicking through to play is counted as one visit rather than two. That is deliberate, and it is most of the reason any of this exists: it answers whether these pages actually help anyone find the game.
The game is a single page that repaints, so a plain visit count would show the whole of it as one screen. It therefore also tells Analytics which screen you opened — the Shop, the Galley, a voyage — and the name of the action behind a button you pressed, such as bought something in the shop or launched a voyage. Knowing which parts of the game get used is what decides which parts get built on.
What it never sends is the substance. Your Discord user ID and username do not reach Google, and neither does anything from your save file — no fish, no balances, no inventory, no results, and none of the detail behind an action. Analytics is told that an action of a certain kind happened; it is not told what that action did, what it was worth, or whose it was. The two records are never joined up, and we do not enable Google's advertising or ad-personalisation features.
If you would rather not be counted, install Google's Analytics opt-out browser add-on, or use any browser or extension that blocks analytics scripts. The game plays exactly the same either way. Staying in Discord avoids all of these services entirely.
06Data Retention & Deletion
Gameplay data is retained for as long as the Bot operates so your progress persists across servers and sessions.
You can delete all of your data yourself, instantly — no request needed:
- In Discord, run /settings (or open /menu and pick ⚙️ Settings);
- Press 🗑️ Delete my data and confirm.
Deletion takes effect immediately and removes everything we store about you. It is permanent: your game progress cannot be restored. If you run into any trouble, contact us (see below) and we will delete your data for you within 30 days.
Website analytics (section 05) is the one exception, and only because it was never yours to delete: it is anonymous visit counting that is never linked to your account, held by Google under their own retention schedule. There is nothing there to find you by. To stop being counted at all, see the opt-out in section 05.
07Security
Game data is stored in a private database accessible only to the Bot's operator. It is not exposed publicly, and access credentials are kept confidential. No method of storage is 100% secure, but we take reasonable measures appropriate to the nature of the data (a game save file).
08Children
OceanBite is intended for users who meet Discord's minimum age requirement (13, or higher where local law requires). We do not knowingly collect data from children below that age; if you believe we have, contact us and we will delete it.
09Changes to this Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Effective date" above reflects the latest revision. Material changes will be reflected on this page; continued use of the Bot after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.
